FedEx Vs. the Yogi

So today was the big day I was supposed to get my new computer.

FedEx came last night and left one of those nifty little door tags saying they had tried to deliver but I wasn't home. Of course I wasn't home -- I work! According to the tag, they would be happy to try and deliver it two more times but, like I said before, I work. I called the 800 number, talked to the nice guy and arranged to have my computer held at the facility in St. Paul. Now, St. Paul is halfway across town for me, but no pain no gain, right?

Fast-forward to today. The big moment! I tell my boss I'm going to take a long lunch so I can drive halfway across town and pick up my computer. I get in the car -- all excited! -- and toodle on over. I find the place, go inside, and find two nice ladies ready to help me. One takes the tag, hands it to the other. I Tweet my excitement to the interwebs. I'm getting my new computer!

Two seconds later I hear, "this isn't here."

The ladies search. They doublecheck. Finally, one of them calls the carrier. He has it.

Why does that mother fraker have it?

Instead of keeping my package, like they should have, they put it back out on the truck, but -- and I know we've covered this -- I work!

Me no home!

I barely managed to restrain myself from yelling -- after all, it wasn't the nice ladies fault -- I get back in the car and drive back to work.

PISSED!

I'm weaving. I'm passing. I'm speeding. I'm royally ticked off.

Finally, I get to the end of the day, and drive to yoga. Now, I don't know how many of you actually do yoga -- well, given that there are only about as many people as I have toes who read this, I do, but you know what I mean -- but I'm beginning to suspect that yoga is the answer to the worlds ills. Seriously. One hour of yoga will completely knock the shit out of whatever baggage you bring in.

Yoga is like an enema for a crappy work day.

So who wins in the battle of FedEx Vs. the Yogi?

Yoga. Hands down.

(No, that isn't supposed to be a Downward Dog pun, but it is just a wee bit funny. Right?)

Desert!

I'm not usually a big sherry fan, but these are amazing! Especially with the fantastic carrot cake - sans cream cheese frosting!

Terror

My computer just scared the shit out of me.

First, a little background.

A few years back I decided to build my own computer. As you know, I work in IT, and this stroke of father pleasing industriousness occurred before I'd fully committed myself to writing. My theory was that I couldn't be a real IT geek unless I had built my own computer. Long story short, it got built and I'm using it.

But it's always been kind of a piece of shit.

Fast-forward... Lately, my computer has been-- let me put it in technical terms -- cranky. I won't go into all the gory details, but when I came home from work this evening and tried to turn it on it didn't know how to boot itself.

First reaction: Panic!

Second reaction: I'm an IT geek, remember?

So, I fixed my bios settings (I don't know how that got screwed up) and I'm up and running again. But in the interim, I was terrified.

What was I going to do without a computer? Sure, I could watch TV, but there's only so much of that a person can do. I could catch up on my comics. Drive my wife crazy. Work late -- not! I could call my mom -- crap, I owe her a call, don't I?

Note that I'm missing the obvious solution here. I could -- gasp -- hang out with friends.

And here is where the terror comes in.

You see, in the last year or so I've pretty much abandoned all my friends in favor of a word processor. Sure, I'll occasionally poke somebody on Facebook but that's no replacement for a social life. And to make matters worse, I'm reasonably certain that if I called one of these abandoned friends up and asked if they wanted to get together they would say, "Shawn who?"

I suppose this is an unpleasant reality I just need to get used to. I'm sure everyone else has by now....

Hope

As a burgeoning blogger, I always struggle with finding topics to blog.

How could have I missed jumping onto the hope train?

There must be zillions of people blogging about hope, right now. I better do it while it's still fashionable.

So. Hope. Let's see. I could go the traditional route - go on and on about "what hope means to me," but what fun is that, really? Aren't we all getting a little sick of that? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Obama fan, but it is getting a little tired.

Let's see some action now, know what I mean?

So. I hope.

Things I hope for:
  • I hope Battlestar Galactica ends strong
  • I hope Dollhouse doesn't suck
  • I hope Queseda decides to let Spiderman grow up someday ( yes, I'm still bemoaning the end of JMS's run)
  • I hope Love and Rockets get back together (obscure band reference -- honk if you get it )
  • I hope it really doesn't get down to -20 this weekend
  • I hope someone actually reads this
  • I hope my grandma gets better soon
  • I hope I finish my book by the beginning of summer
  • I hope @mplstravelkitty continues to kick yoga ass

And finally: I hope those hairs really are blonde!

TKTG Update: Part one is done!

I finally finished the final draft of the first five chapters of To Kill the Goddess. Yay me!

My goal is to complete this final draft by late spring or early summer. I don't really know what will happen after that. I do plan on handing out this final draft to proofreaders and I do expect to get some comments back from that. So, technically, what I'm working on it right now isn't the FINAL final draft, but I do believe that this will be the last draft of major revisions.

One question I've been wrestling with a lot is what to do when I'm done. Alternative means of independent publishing look more attractive all the time but I do expect to pursue a traditional publisher. At least I'm going to start out that way. We will see what happens on that front. The real bummer about that is that I can't post any of my work without running into potential copyright/publication issues. Bleh.

Bad Waitress!

After a harrowing drive through the "sketchy" part of downtown we have arrived at the diner with the coolest logo EVAR!
